SEALS Alumni

A key strength of SEALS is its vibrant alumni network, connecting members with former students who have excelled in law both in Australia and internationally, offering mentorship, insights, and career opportunities that last well beyond graduation.

Alumni Testimonials

“SEALS is a society that is so close to my heart, ever since I started University 6 years ago. I am grateful for every interaction that I made with the society, every friendship, every change, every achievement and milestone that I gained with a wonderful 2024/5 team of mine, and other teams that I have interacted with before.

To me, SEALS is not merely a society where I concluded my term as a President. It is my so-called second-home, where I was able to test my vision and ability as a leader, was able to bring many new changes and grow the society, to put myself in the forefront for any challenges and learned so many skills from it, with a team who shares the same thoughts and passion that I feel so belonged to. I had the best memories in university, thankfully to my favourite student body! (sneak peek: watch out for my IG post of appreciation soon!)”

“SEALS was a core part of my journey at USYD. Through SEALS, I formed friendships that have endured well beyond graduation and even across borders. What made it especially meaningful was not only the bonds within the society itself, but also the connections formed through inter-society collaborations with SULS, CLSS and KLUS, which broadened my network and enriched my law school experience in unexpected ways.

My advice to current and prospective students is simple: be active. The more you contribute, the more you gain. SEALS offers an incredible platform for growth, leadership, and most importantly, it is a welcoming community.”

“I started my JD at Sydney Law School in 2020, and law school was tough from the very beginning. Doing it mostly online made it even harder. Everything felt intense and unfamiliar. Joining SEALS honestly changed that for me.

SEALS gave me a community of like-minded people who made law school feel far less overwhelming and much more like home. Through late-night study sessions, events, and simply doing life together, I formed friendships that have lasted well beyond university. Some of my closest friends today are people I met through SEALS.

Being part of the executive team was also a huge privilege. It pushed me to grow in leadership, but more importantly, to lead through serving others. It also gave me the opportunity to connect with past presidents whose mentorship has been invaluable.

SEALS was one of the most meaningful parts of my law school journey, and I’ll always be grateful for the people who made those years so special.”

“Moving from a civil law background to USYD was a huge culture shock. Between the academic shift to common law and the fact that Master’s students tend to stay in their own bubbles, I felt pretty isolated at first. Joining SEALS changed everything for me. It broke down those walls, giving me a space to connect with fellow LLM, and other LLB and JD students who were all navigating the same challenges.

SEALS honestly became my home away from home. It was the one thing that actually cured my homesickness. The friendships I made there weren't just for a semester, they’ve lasted long after graduation, even now as I’m building my career in Singapore.

During my time there, I saw how much the society's career insights and alumni advice meant, especially to the bachelor students who were just starting to figure out the job market.

If I could give any advice, it’s this: don’t just bury your head in your books. Enjoy your time and focus on making real connections. Those relationships and networks are what you’ll actually carry with you along the way!”

“I graduated in December 2023 with degrees in Commerce (Business Analytics)/Law. I participated in SEALS in my first year (as secretary) and second year (as president).

Looking back, my most important takeaway from university is still the connections you make. Although in university substantial emphasis is placed on grades and studies, your peers will be the people you interact with for the vast majority of your career. The 5 years spent in university is but a fraction of your career!

SEALS to me was a circle where you made strong friendships with people from a similar background. It also gave me exposure to different viewpoints in terms of career options and personal development. I made friendships that I am confident will last for many years to come.”

“Law school was a great many things for me — but initially, it was an opportunity to understand how the world practically worked. The classes and content were innately interesting, but in my time there, I experienced far beyond just the classroom. I had the opportunity to volunteer at Redfern Legal Centre, compete in moots and negotiations, judge competitions, and appear on a podcast! But meeting folks from all walks of life that were passionate about access to justice, the resolution of disputes in a just and fair manner, and the philosophical questions of law more broadly, was the highlight — with these friendships lasting well beyond law school. I still keep in touch with a bunch of them!"

SEALS was a convening ground for anyone from the law school with any affiliation to Southeast Asia. We welcomed all — from the international students looking to form friendships in a foreign land, to local students looking to get in touch with their cultures. We even welcomed anyone who simply might be curious about the region! Ultimately, it was a community for all, that assisted and journeyed with each other through law school — be it through simple things like sharing notes, or larger endeavours like organising career events or fun excursions around Sydney. I still look back fondly on memories of my time at SEALS today.”
